Pope Benedict, on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Patron of the Church, released his Pastoral Letter to the Irish Faithful: "You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry. I know that nothing can undo the wrong you have endured. Your trust has been betrayed ... your dignity has been violated. ... In [the Church's] name, I openly express the shame and remorse that we all feel. At the same time, I ask you not to lose hope. It is in the communion of the Church that we encounter the person of Jesus Christ, who was Himself a victim of injustice and sin. Like you, He still bears the wounds of His own unjust suffering. Media coverage of past child abuse by clergy recently increased, following the Holy Father issuing his letter to the Irish Faithful. In a note entitled "Vigil of Holy Week," Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. has reiterated that the Holy Father and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith are guiding and supporting Bishops "to combat and root out the blight of abuse wherever it appears." Father Lombardi pointed out that while many cases actually occurred a number of years ago, Holy Mother Church is seeking to restore Justice and achieve "purification of memory" by recognizing what happened and attempting to make amends to victims. click to read more ...
