2008 Election Novena: U.S. Bishops call Faithful to pray Novena for Faithful Citizenship, for Life, Justice, Peace
Aug. 24, 2008
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is calling for American Catholics to pray a Novena for Faithful Citizenship -- for life, justice, and peace -- in anticipation of, and as preparation for, the 2008 elections.
Bishops Conference spokespersons explained that the novena forms part of an effort to help Catholics develop well-formed consciences with respect to public issues, and reflect prayerfully as they prepare to vote.
Several options for praying the novena include:
+ nine consecutive days leading up to the Nov. 4, 2008, election, starting on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, and finishing on election day
+ each Tuesday for nine weeks leading up to the election, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, the day after Labor Day, and concluding on election day, Nov. 4, 2008
+ for groups that meet on a particular day, praying on that day each week for nine weeks
+ any combination "that works best for a community or individual"
+ praying the novena more than once
