Pope Benedict to issue economic Encyclical focusing on objectives and values towards creating "a truly free and united ... human coexistence"
June 16, 2009
The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI says he soon will be issuing a new Encylical addressing economic issues. He indicates "will highlight what, for us as Christians, are the objectives that need to be pursued and what values to be tirelessly promoted and defended in order to create a truly free and united form of human coexistence."
It sounds as if several touchstones include, with respect to economic matters:
+ values to be promoted and defended
+ objectives that need to be pursued
+ to create a human coexistence that is truly free
+ to create a human coexistence that is truly united
In related additional remarks to the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, perhaps by implication also shedding additional light on the Supreme Pontiff's thinking, the Holy Father said that the efforts of that Foundation should:
+ draw inspiration from the eternal principles of the Gospel
+ lead to a vision of the modern economy respectful of the needs and rights of the weakest
One might expect that the Encyclical will draw, in part, on Matthew 25, where the Final Judgment rests in part upon how persons treat the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned, and the stranger. Recall also the Old Testament focus on the widow, the orphan, and the resident alien.
